Mirror Southern Travellers at Bosham Sailing Club

A glorious day for the Mirrors at Bosham © Nicky Chapple

Round 5 of the Mirror Southern Traveller Series at Bosham saw the competitors enjoy some sparkling conditions, for the first time this season summer sailing gear was the order of the day. With high pressure cantered over the South generating a northerly and rising temperatures, the scene was set for some taxing conditions as the two breezes thought each other, fortunately the gradient wind had the upper hand to keep things relatively stable

Race One saw National Champions Hector and Ben C isneros battle it out with another father and son team John Clementson and Jamie Clementson, third at the Nationals. But their early lead was bought to an end as they ran into a tide line of weed along the rhumb line leading to the gybe mark. Seeing the two leaders stationery, the rest of the fleet were able to take a longer course avoiding the weed, resulting in a virtual restart of the race. By the end of the next lap, the pecking order had re-established itself with the Clementsons w inning from the Cisneros, and Simon Lovesey and Charlotte Griffin third.

With a building tide race 3 was much more of a simpler affair, with the same top three.

With no discard the event was still wide open, this saw the first two boats battling it out before the start, which with the tide resulted in both being pushed over the line. On returning against the line, they were the last boats to start. Simon Lovesey and Charlotte Griffin managed to get a clean start and eek out an unass ailable lead, with the event leaders having to work their way through the fleet, with John and Jamie eventually finishing second, and Hector and Ben third. This gave John and Jamie the open meeting, with Simon and Charlotte taking second place on count back from Hector and Ben.

The Southern Traveller consists of eight events at a variety of coastal and inland venues. Next event Chichester YC, 11 June. See www.ukmirrorsailing.com
