Lark National Championship 2019 at Rock - Day 3

by Steve Cumley & Stuart Hydon 28 May 2019 06:26 BST 25-28 May 2019
Lark Nationals at Rock © Roger Williams

After an hour's postponement to assess conditions the final decision was made to race just off Daymer Bay instead of joining the surfers at Polzeath. This was a master stroke by the OD because the conditions were just right for two screaming races.

Race 1 began with most pushing for the committee boat end. By the end of the first beat James Goss/Chris White lead around the windward mark followed by Nigel Hufton/Matt Wood showing continued speed from yesterday. In third it was Stuart and Nick Hydon narrowly in front of Emma Harris/Becky Priest. The leaders managed to sail in their own company with the Hydons eventually pulling past Hufton/Wood. Race winners were Goss/White followed by the Hydons and Hufton/Wood.

Race 2 was started with a gate start and by the end of the first beat Goss/White led by a small margin from the Hydons followed by Hufton/Wood. Gradually Goss/White and the Hydons pulled away to have their own battle with the Hydons waiting for Goss /White to make a mistake. That didn't happen and the results were Goss/White first (making it 5 bullets in a row!). The Hydons took second followed by Hufton/Wood.

All sailors came ashore with smiles and stories to tell. There was places changing on every leg including the reaches which were just epic!

This nationals is proving very competitive not just with the talented sailors in the Lark Fleet but also demonstrating the longevity of the boats with a couple of sub £600, over 25 year old, Parker Mk2 Larks mixing it at the front of the fleet with top 5 results. What a great time to get into Larks.
