ORC forms the biggest fleet at the 16th Sail Racing PalmaVela

With almost 60 boats registered so far, the ORC fleet will be the most numerous at the 16th edition of Sail Racing Palma Vela. The regatta will be held from May 8th to 12th from the Real Club Náutico de Palma.

Next Wednesday, May 8th the Sail Racing PalmaVela will celebrate its 16th edition. More than 120 boats will hoist their sails on the bay of Palma, with the ORC class forming the biggest fleet among the handicap divisions.

Fifty seven boats have registered so far and should be divided into five groups: ORC 0, ORC 1, ORC 2, ORC 3, ORC 4 and ORC 5.

Those boats will represent a total of 15 nations, the host country Spain having the greatest representation among the ORC classes. There will also be teams from the United Kingdom, Russia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United States, France, Norway, Belgium, Malta, Antigua, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany and Monaco.

ORC 0 will be the class that has only one Spanish representative: the Swan Club 50 Aifos of the Spanish Navy, skippered by Jaime Rodríguez-Toubes.

Among the top contenders will be two of the winners of the last edition, looking to defend their titles at this 16th Sail Racing PalmaVela. They are Fehurihi Segon ownered by Carlos Ros and Jaime Morell's Mestral Fast.

A maximum of five races for the ORC classes

The ORC classes sailing programme at Sail Racing PalmaVela includes a maximum of five scoring races. The plan is that at least one of them will be a coastal race. The others will be of a windward-leeward format.

The first day of racing for ORC class will be Friday, May 10th, from 12h00 local time onwards. On Sunday the 12th, last racing day, the class winners will be known.

A lively social programme

The competition will be complemented by various social events. Among them, the exhibition of the Sail Racing PalmaVela prize collection, which this features the works of painter Elena Roig. This collection will be inaugurated at the official presentation of the regatta to the media, which will be held on Wednesday, the 8th, at 1:00 pm, in the Magna Room of the RCNP.

The 16th Sail Racing PalmaVela is organised by the Real Club Náutico de Palma, with the endorsement of the Real Federación Española de Vela (Spanish Sailing Federation), sponsored by Sail Racing, and with the institutional support of the Govern de les Illes Balears (Balearic Island Regional Government) and the Ajuntament de Palma (Palma Town Hall), as well as the collaboration of the Federación Balear de Vela (Balearic Islands' Sailing Federation), Club Náutic S'Arenal and the Autoridad Portuaria de Baleares (Balearic Islands' Port Authority).
