A group of primary school children in West Wales have taken a huge step towards taking up sailing as part of RYA Cymru Wales All Afloat and Get Out Get Active.

Seventeen Year 5 and 6 pupils from Neyland Community and Johnston Community School took part in the week and many have carried on taking an interest in sailing - as well as trying to get family members involved.

There were a few who attended the Saturday club session at the end of the week at Neyland. Nearly all have shown interest in coming back on Thursday evenings through the summer.

RYA Cymru Wales set up the All Afloat charity to open up a pathway into sailing or windsurfing for disadvantaged communities.

The private funding will allow Welsh boating to build on the RYA OnBoard programme and Sport Wales development support through the All Afloat charitable foundation.

"A few attended a Saturday session which was integrated with this season's new starters at the club," explained RYA Cymru Wales West Wales development officer Hester Walker.

"We have interest from nearly all to come back for Thursday evenings next week and running into mid-august.

"What was lovely was they ended up bring some siblings, we got them some taster trips and hope to offer them some further training.

"We had some strong winds the first few sessions and the loan of a Bahia from Laser was appreciated to get the kids afloat, however they coped admirably in single handers with the fresh breeze on their third day."
