Phantom National Championship at Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club - Preview

by Chris Roberts 5 Jul 2018 14:53 BST 7-9 September 2018

The Phantom fleet is returning to Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club for its National Championship to be held over 7th – 9th September.

It is a decade since a Phantom Championship at Felixstowe and the Class Association are delighted to have secured another event at this premier East Coast club. Those that recall the past event will confirm that the hospitality and facilities are second to none – but the club are pulling out all the stops to exceed the 2008 event.

The entry in 2008 was 62 boats and this year it is anticipated that this figure will be exceeded. The champion then was Jim Hunt and rumour has it that several of the classes leading sailmakers are seeking boats to allow representation and enhance their standing in the fleet.

The competition will be intense at the front of the fleet with Andy Couch showing great form in his new boat and Will Gulliver has been working hard on developing new sails with P&B with his tuning buddy "Titch" Wayling.

Dark horses included Ian Scott, Nick Orman and Simon Hawkes who have all shown their potential during the season. A new boy to the class to watch is Alistair Morley from Salcombe who had a good showing at the Inlands and won the Bowmoor Open earlier this year.

The strong Eastern region are bound to be well represented with Matt House and Bob Portway both showing they've still got what it takes. Former Champion Paul Church might also be a dark horse to watch at this venue.

Ovington have been busy building new boats this year with a full order book and rumours are swirling about just who has bought these precious boats.

With the support of a well known local Brewery being arranged the Class Association is keen to ensure that sailors of all abilities take the opportunity of enjoying a festival of Phantom racing!

Online entry is available here.
