Day 2 of the ANCASTA South West IRC Championships hosted by Flushing Sailing Club provided challenging easterly conditions again for competitors in the three classes sailing in Falmouth Bay.
The sun was out, the Bay and Carrick Roads were full of sailors and stinkpots enjoying some of the best conditions and scenery in the country. The day's racing was generously sponsored by Cream Cornwall, interior designers of distinction.
Race Officer Jack Penty set two accurate windward/leeward courses to start on an uncomfortable day with a big irregular swell and a fluctuating breeze. In Class 1 the battle between Insatiable, the turboed Farr 30 and Jalabeano was well and truly on with both boats taking a first and second with only one point separating them going into the last day. The Devon boys on Joyride had an enjoyable day with two thirds and will no doubt be shown where the correct and only place to put their jam on a Cornish Cream tea later.
The points in the competitive Class 2 tightened up with Antix scoring a third and a first to hold the lead on 8 pts with Rampage scoring a first and a second to close to 13 points and Demolition with Mel Sharp, the Chairman of IRC holding a close third on 13 points.
In Class 3, A Little Trifle, the Sonata of Chris Jelliss holds a reasonable strong lead of four points going onto the last day after scoring two firsts with two GK24s, Wilkie and Popincoota battling for second place. Unfortunately, the third race had to be abandoned after the moody easterly wind decided to give up for the day.
The Dick of the Day special prize went to the helm of a Sigma 33 who managed to hit the Finish Boat not once but a second time to make absolutely certain, no damage being incurred thankfully. Seasickness also became a feature unfortunately particularly for one competitor who lost his denture after one particularly bad set of waves and being rewarded with a fishing net at the prize-giving in the Clubhouse afterwards to try and retrieve them.
The daily prizes were awarded by Rebecca Heane of Cream Cornwall after she had cooked a great barbecue on the Club Quay with competitors and volunteers enjoying a glorious evening to end a challenging day's racing.
