Salcombe Yacht Club Spring Series - Race 5

by David Greening 16 Apr 2018 11:37 BST 14 April 2018

The forecast light south easterly wind did not auger well for the 5th race of the Salcombe Yacht Club Spring Series, however by the start of the racing it had backed around to a fresh East North Easterly, with good beating in the harbour and planing reaches across Widegates, which the courses set by Race Officer Malcolm Mackley made the most of.

The Solos were first away, beating toward Crossways, with Phil King leading the pack, by the return from Gerston, Phil had built up a comfortable lead, but it was nip and tuck racing between the five chasing boats; who swapped places between 2nd to 6th throughout the race.

At the lead in to the final mark, Graham Cranford-Smith had secured second place from Simon Dobson, with David Greening closing the door on the new boat of Roger Guess, an order that was maintained to the finishing line.

Nineteen boats turned out for the Handicap fleet start, with the three leading Phantom's sailing around in formation, in pursuit of the 505 of Peter Colclough and Robin Hodges. A large gust of wind at the final gybe mark saw Ian Stewart capsizing, which denied the Phantoms a podium lock out.
