Musto Skiff class announce National Training day

by Rick Perkins 10 Feb 2006 16:20 GMT 8-9 April 2006

Musto Skiff Class announce National Training day on April 8th and 9th at 6 locations throughout the UK. The training is to be run by the class’s top sailors.

“Class training by the class for the class is a key part of the Musto Skiff success” said Paul Clarke Chairman of the MPS Class Association. Clarke continues “With so many newcomers entering the class the length and breadth of the country we wanted to kick-off early with training at 6 locations throughout the UK on April 8th and 9th 2006”.

Training events will be run by the class’s top sailors including Richard Stenhouse winner of the Gold Cup and former Olympic Finn Representative, Ian Trotter current UK & European Champion and former International 14 POW winner and Ian Renilson former Contender World Champion.

The locations are as follows:

  • Dalgety Bay – Trainer: Ian Renilson
  • Derwent Water – Trainer: Ian Trotter
  • Rutland Water – Trainers: Richard and Kit Stenhouse
  • Thorpe Bay – Trainer: Danny Clark and Paul Clark
  • Whitstable – Trainers: Rick Perkins & Simon Reynolds
  • Venue TBA – Trainer: Jamie Stevenson

“We have seen many new owners join the class and we now have a shortage of used boats; there is no doubt that getting to grips with the Musto Skiff is a challenge but the willingness of the top sailors to muck in and help the new owners is one of the thing that makes the fleet such a nice bunch …” said Paul Manning Operations Director of Victor Boats who market the Musto Skiff.

The training days will have formats defined by the various trainers and anyone who owns a Musto Skiff and wants to participate must register with the appropriate trainer. These events are geared up for the training of new owners and any prospective owners should contact Victor Boats to arrange a test sail rather than attend one of these events.

Barry Shotton who recently brought GBR216 Said “There can’t be many classes where 6 of the top 10 at the last world championships is willing to give up their time to train up the rest of the fleet. The openness of the top Musto Skiff sailors to help newcomers is one of the key reasons I brought the boat – that plus of course that it is a great boat”

In summary; this initiative will see the association running training for all members of the class at 6 locations on one weekend – this is a great start to the season and further training days will be announced in due course.

The deadline for booking a spot at a training day is 31st March 2006.
