33 boats took to the Deben for our laser open on Sunday 19th June, with visitors from Aldeburgh, Royal Harwich and Orford.

The morning racing was held north of the island, into a southerly force 3-4. With so many boats, It was a packed line but racing finally got underway with a shifty beat into the current and the tricky decision of when to tack over to the windward mark in the main channel.

In the first race Ian Videlo used all his know-how to pull through despite a huge shift in the opening beat, followed by Hamish Stone and Stephen Videlo. The wind increased for race 2 and Hamish, Stephen and Ben Stone pulled away from the fleet, eventually finishing in that order.

After lunch and with the tide now ebbing, race officer Gordon Harris moved the course to the south side of the island. The main gains could be made from choosing the best side of the river to run down, which changed throughout the afternoon.

In the third race, Hamish went against the grain and picked the west side, overtaking the leading boats and going on to take his second win of the day after another long battle with Stephen. In race 4, Stephen sailed through the fleet for a convincing, with Toby Tracey in second and impressive results from Radial sailors Ashley Deaton and Daisy Collingridge in third and fourth.

Congratulations to Hamish on his win on a great day's racing.
