Laser 4000 Nationals at Dalgety Bay Sailing Club - Day 1

by Editor 14 Aug 2000 22:30 BST

With most of the fleet having arrived by Sunday Dalgety Bay sailing club put on a haggis and whisky tasting courtesy of Gordon & MacPhail as a warm up prior to the first days sailing.

Monday morning and the sun was out and with a force three the fleet went afloat to enjoy the first days racing sponsored by Ronstan. After the obligatory general recall the black flag came out and the fleet got away for the first race. Ian Calder returning to the fleet after a couple of years absence led the race from start to finish. SP Systems - Luke McEwen and Emma Evans made the most of their new sails to come in a close second, Konisberg - Hugh Watson and Helen Lloyd came in third.

The increase in wind during the first race required the course to be rejigged and the fleet was soon racing again. Ian Sanderson and Sue Winter led for most of the race but were finally caught and passed on the leg to the finish. SP Systems took first and Trident UK - David and Jackie Gebhard came through for a second.

The third and final race and a few of the fleet seemed to have forgotten about the black flag as six boats were caught over the line, including Ian Calder who had been first over the finish line. Local sailmakers Owen Sails - Chris Owen & crew were happy to take the win, Adobe - Pete and Lisa Nicholas were second with Preferred-IT in third.

This leaves SP Systems as the overall leaders with 19 pts with Adobe and Preferred-IT on 20 pts.

As I write this the fleets are enjoying a combination of bouncy boxing, sumo wrestling, bar bungee and gladiators. With only one injury so far things are building up nicely for the disco later.
