Windy racing for Town sailors
With the wind heading towards thirty knots in the western Solent the decision to launch boats to compete in round five of Lymington Towns Sailing Club's Perisher Series was in the balance. However, a quick straw poll in the clubhouse left the sailors to make the decision, and, by a narrow margin, eighteen boats were rigged and ready to go on time.
The race officer elected to set a relatively safe course, up and down the river, which meant a reach both ways, sometimes tight and sometimes broad enough to allow spinnakers to be used, albeit in short bursts.
The fleet was soon spread over the entire length of the river, so it was decided to determine the outcome of the race by using lap times. This meant some boats doing three laps and others two. After crunching the numbers, the RS Aero sailed by top sailor Peter Barton took the win by a convincing three minutes on corrected time. Robbie Boyd took second place in his Laser Radial. Third spot was taken by series leaders Luke and Emma McEwen in their RS800.
Results after Race 5: (top three)
1st Luke & Emma McEwen (RS800) 5pts
2nd Keith & Julie Willis (RS Venture) 8pts
3rd Evie Snedker & David Ellis (RS Feva XL) 9pts
Racing continues on Sunday 7th February with race six of the series. The start will be at 11:00hrs from the LTSC River line.
