148th Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club Regatta Week

by Ben Williamson 22 Aug 2005 13:49 BST 13-20 August 2005

The event opened on Saturday with the traditional Fleet Review, won by Premier Cru and the Ladies Race for the House of Fraser Rose Bowl won by Linda Dyson sailing the Squib Little Demon. Racing proper ran from Sunday through to Friday in great weather with the breeze ranging from a very gusty Sunday with only the J24s and IRC class able to race to glorious conditions for the remainder of the week.

In the J24 class Rumble (R Wharram) took control of the event winning the first 5 races, however Riot refound their form to take the next 3 races. Rumble counting all firsts and seconds won the week and the Prince of Wales Cup for the third year running, with a consistent and improving Jelignite (P Waine) taking second place overall. Cool Jade (J Copsey) won the Westerly trophy.

The Squib class had 7 boats with some very close racing all week. Gerard Dyson continued his good form from the Nationals to take 1st place overall, a first for Gerard in a number of years. Perkers (N Orum) was second.

The story of the week came from the rejuvenated Yorkshire One Design class, with 11 of the 13 existing boats racing. Many have been recently extensively restored including the Commodore's boat Yilt (D Armstrong) and Blackie with owners Tim Rix and Mark Eggleston working for a solid two weeks on the boat to complete the restoration just in time for the regatta and going on to win the week on their first outing in the boat. Second was Sinner (H Jones) who showed some exceptional pace on the breezier days.

The IRC class was dominated by visiting boats with Bee Sharp (D Turner) winning and No Nonsense (D Frank) taking second. Top Bridlington boat was Starchick in third. The dinghy catamaran class was dominated by M Exon sailing Mat Finish.

The Commodore's Rose Bowl for overall winner of the week was won by the J24 Rumble counting 7 firsts from their 11 race series.
