Big wind greets Masters in San Diego
The San Diego Yacht Club's annual International Masters Regatta officially kicked off today in San Diego Bay. Consistent wind at 8-10 knots, gusting at 15-18 created a beautiful platform for racing in front of the downtown skyline. The first race started right after 1:00 pm and Malin Burnham took a tight lead. The fleet stayed together with no room for error. Burnham was able to keep the lead and ended up winning the first race, followed by Sandy Purdon in second and Jon Andron in third. After a stealthy boat rotation on the floating dock, the competitors were quickly ready for Race 2. The fleet quickly spread out as they headed up wind toward their first windward mark rounding, Jon Andron getting there first. The leads changed a bit heading down with Dennis Durgan as the first to round the leeward mark. Andron was able to take back the lead to win the second and final race of day 1. Gary Jobson followed in second and Augie Diaz in third.
Mobile phone based race tracking was provided by Kwindoo, for a live look at the on-the-water racing and post-race replays. SDYC's Dave Vieregg, fresh off of chairing an epic J/70 North American Championship in San Diego, spent the day on the water providing between-race interviews with skippers Malin Burnham, Sandy Purdon, and John Andron.
Racing continues at an adjusted start time of 1130 on Saturday. Following racing is the always entertaining banquet dinner featuring introductions of each team and photos from the Master sailors' past.
Results, photos and tracking replays are posted at www.sdyc.org/masters, with video interviews on the Masters Facebook page at www.facebook.com/mastersregatta.
