Gul Fireball World Championships at Plas Heli - Mae hi'n heulog heddiw!

by Dougal Henshall 24 Aug 2015 13:58 BST 17-28 August 2015

Mae hi'n heulog heddiw!

Or, as the non-locals here at Plas Heli might say, "It's a sunny day" (with a mixture of relief and incredulity in their voices).

But the truth is there for all to see, with the change in conditions seeing a blossoming of wet gear, sodden clothing and damp spinnakers all being hung out to dry. Certainly the predicted change in the weather has arrived on across the Llyn peninsular, though the best of the forecasts is suggesting something in the region of a 10% chance of more rain later.

More important though is the change to the wind and the subsequent sea states. With the breeze round to the North West (330 is looking a popular direction right now) and not a lot more than 10 knots expected, we could see some new names at the front of the fleet today. Christian Birrell is certainly one who is forecasting that some of the European boats will be well represented, but he feels that this is a good thing. "It would be all too one dimensional if we had 15 knot plus every day" he said.

The Race Team are all leaving the Marina, so the scene is set for the first attempt at a start to be pretty much on time at 1300 hours. However, with the off shore breeze expected to have some pretty major shifts along the way, it will be as trying a day for the Race Team as for the competitors.

Pob lwc... or Good Luck

Some experienced competitors found the challenge a bit too robust Yesterday's Frostbites in Dun Laoghaire Harbour were a test for organisers and competitors alike.
