Series draws to a fantastic close

This year's RS Tera Northern 'Summer Tour' drew to a close at the Open Meeting hosted by South Windermere SC on Saturday 11 July. Sunshine and a good breeze provided ideal conditions for the 19 strong fleet, and gave the young sailors the chance to get some great races in for their final summer meeting.

The series ended in the Lake District, which was where it began! Bassenthwaite SC hosted the first meeting, way back in early May, and their enthusiasm for Tera sailing set the scene for the summer. Ripon SC were next, where we saw the largest turn out of 'new helms', some of whom only started sailing this year, testing the water and having huge fun. On to Derwent Reservoir next where their reputation for 'high altitude sailing' took on new meaning with Saturday canned due to howling gales and Sunday sadly lost due to the horrendous gusts which meant the fleet could not be managed safely. Overall 50 helms took part in the series, and the prizegiving for the series saw a total of 19 qualifiers – all of whom received a prize thanks to the generosity of our wonderful sponsor, Mike Saul Dinghy Services.

The fleet now prepare for the World Championships in Holland, and WPNSA for the National Championships but it's not the end of racing in the North as we have an additional meeting in the calendar – at Leigh and Lowton SC on 12 and 13 September. With significant increases in existing fleets, the development of some new club fleets and with new blood coming in to replace 'the big guys' who have moved on to Lasers, Fevas and RS200s the future is looking very bright for RS Tera sailing in the North.

Thanks go to all the parents who've got their sailors to the various venues, and to our brilliant host clubs who have all made us feel so very welcome, and to our fantastic coaching team who have been out at every event making sure that the fleet develops.
