The HISC Get Racing Club events got underway this month, continuing to bridge the gap for members wishing to get into racing, whilst introducing new elements for the 2015 season.

The opening event on 11th April was greeted with Force 5 gusting Force 6 from the west; not ideal conditions to start the season! The decision was made to stay ashore and spend the time gaining racing tips and skills from the volunteer experts, in the comfort of the HISC clubhouse. A new angle to the GRC for 2015 is that HISC classes will lead each event, so RS Elite sailors Paul and Caroline Fisk and Mike McIntyre delivered a motivating and thought-provoking series of topics to the GRC participants. Items covered included start line skills, racing rules, effects of tide and using tell-tales on sails. Despite the strong forecast 15 enthusiastic GRC participants convened to benefit from the extremely useful tips from the highly experienced mentors.

The weather improved for this weekend's GRC event with Force 3 gusting 4 on Saturday 25th April encouraging the sailors out onto the water in an array of dinghies including the club RS Ventures, a laser and a couple of RS200s. This week the Solo class hosted the event with a team of mentors on hand during the three back to back races, ready to assist the participants in start line manoeuvres, upwind techniques, sail trimming and downwind performance. In the debrief after the racing, the mentors encouraged the GRC participants to get in touch with club RS200 fleet via their facebook page www.facebook.com/groups/HISCRS200 in order to have a go at club racing by crewing for one of the RS200 fleet.
