Hong Kong Laser Nationals at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club

by Swanson Chan 2 Dec 2014 20:48 GMT 29-30 November 2014

Hong Kong's Laser sailors were out in full force this weekend for one of the largest and most successful Laser Nationals the S.A.R. held to date. The event drew 41 Laser Standards, Radials and 4.7s - with some sailors coming from Japan.

The annual regatta was organized by the Hong Kong Laser Class Association (HKLCA) and held from November 29-30 at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club's facility in Middle Island. Climate change ensured that the planned six races were held in a variety of wind conditions; between 14-17 knots on the first day under clear skies, and 5-13 knots on the second under darker clouds.

The races were ably managed by one of Hong Kong's top race officials, Charlie Manzoni. Last year's Radial Youth Winner, J-Asia's Gerald Williams, won the two-day event in the Laser Standard in a hard-fought series of races; long-time National champion and J-Asia sailor Isamu Sakai came in second. Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club's Alex Llewellyn finished third.

In the Laser Radial Division, J-Asia's Riley Cameron took first place, with Sofia-Marie Mascia in second. RHKYC's Jacqueline Truhol captured third place. Fleet Leader Jacqueline and her fellow RHKYC Sharks dominated the Radial Youth Division, she was also named top Radial Youth Sailor of the Regatta, with Pierre Bureau in second, and Malik Hood in third.

The Laser 4.7 Division belonged to the Bezy brothers, Nicholas, who won the class championship for the second year in a row; and Christopher who bagged third place. Gerald's younger sister Marian, came between the brothers, finishing second overall.

"We were very excited about this year's regatta. It was an amazing turnout with some world-class sailing. We're looking forward to next year's event," said Dominick Hardoon, HKLCA president.
