At the end of a memorable sailing season noted for long forgotten levels of sun and fantastic winds, Flushing Sailing Club celebrated with a well-attended annual prize-giving at the Clubhouse on Saturday evening. Over 80 sailors led by Commodore Chris Jelliss thanked sponsors including Sailtech, Cockwells Boatbuilders, Skinners Brewery, Choaks Pasties, Hine Downing Solicitors, the Marine Bar and Penrose Sailmakers for assisting the best supported club sailing in Falmouth Harbour. Also thanked were the excellent Race Officers ably led by Kaye Price.
Club President Roger Little made the presentations for both the 8 series held over the season and the special and overall trophies. Youth trophies were given to Annie Trenoweth (Folkboat), Jack Elsby-Hartman (Working Boat) and Charlie Frost (Intro 22) for their excellent and developing skills. The Club has been recognised at the national level for its introduction of IRC due to the efforts of Sailing Secretary Bob Chapple and has been a real success.
Mandy Owens in the Nordic Folkboat Aurora won the Spinlock sponsored IRC Best Performing Yacht, the Ken Stephenson Trophy for most wins (18 race wins) and two race series in the small yachts Class U with Bob Chapple (GK24), Len Trenoweth (Nordic Folkboat) and Mike Swingler (H Boat) winning the remaining series in arguably the most competitive of classes this year. The Sigma 33 Excelle owned by John Fox and Toby Claridge won three series in Class E.
The Gaffers were dominated by Dragonfly (Mike Maguire) who won three series, whilst the Large Working Boats shared their principal trophies amongst Grace (Dan & Polly Tregaskes), Winnie (Arthur Williams) and Rita (John Peters). The larger IRC yachts saw two series won by David Cunliffe sailing Encore (modified Laser 28), with Robbie Tregear sailing Per Elisa (Half-tonner) picking up the other series win. The competitive racing in the white-sail class was close throughout the season with Mike Robson and David Layton sailing Amneris winning two series.
Club stalwart John Cruise, in the Contessa 26 Mary Boon won the final series of the year, the Penrose Sails Frostbite Pursuit Series, holding off the challenge from Black Dog a J111. Tony Cook and his merry band on Jackdaw took the title of most races entered (38) and are fast catching up with the crew of Hawk in supporting the bar profits. The full list of trophy and prize-winners is on the Club website - www.flushingsailingclub.co.uk.
So this marks the end of a special season for the Club, which is now well into its winter programme with the highlight being inspirational sailor and explorer Pete Goss on 19th November.
