2014 Optimist World Championship at Club Náutico San Isidro - Day 4

by Pilar Garcia Hernandez 29 Oct 2014 06:51 GMT 20-31 October 2014

After the Opti Team Racing Worlds and the spare day, the second stage of the OptiWorlds Argentina 2014 Individual Cup started with a radical change on the weather conditions.

Six races were held last week and the fleet was divided into Gold, Silver and Bronze. Each fleet has 70 sailors. This first part of this championship had light winds, lot of current and little waves but today it changed completely. The wind gauge marked 23 knots from the South East on the race area, the waves were high and short, there were current and it was cloudy. These changes made their mark on the results.

The Gold Fleet had two races. The Brazilian sailor, Gustavo Abdulklech won the first race and then Voravong Rachrattanaruk from Thailand won the second race. The Silver fleet also held two races but the bronze fleet only had one because of the strong winds.

Nicolaz Rolaz from Switzerland now leads the championship with Dimitris Papadimitriou from Greece second and Gustavo Abdilklech from Brazil in third. Mara Turin, who was winning the OptiWorld before the day's racing, is 8th after a very hard day.

The coach of the Brazilian Team, Filipe Novello told us about the racing day, "The wind was really hard. I thought Gustavo was going to stay in the top five because is 15 years old and he has lots of experience with this kind of wind. In the first race Gustavo made a good start and he won, then in the second one he didn't start so well but he recovered." Gustavo's parents are here and Filipe told me, "It's good that parents are here, always is good if they are ready to help with anything they need and let the coach make his job."

Tomorrow Meteoclim, the OptiWorld Official Weather Forecast shows it will be rainy and less wind than today.
