Something big is happening on the northern Junior and Youth sailing scene this week, and the action has started today! Local club, Derwent Reservoir SC, is to host the 2014 RS Tera National Championships over the Bank Holiday weekend and in preparation a 3 day coaching camp is being held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

The Head Coach for the coaching is Brett Cokayne and he will be supported by Bernard Clark, Katy Phillips and Helen Armstrong. The team are due to put 30 young helms through their paces in preparation for the main event, which starts on Friday.

The coaching team have excellent credentials - Brett and Bernard were part of the 'Saltonstall' era receiving Youth coaching from the RYA's legendary coach Jim Saltonstall. They work as the coaches for the RS Tera Northern Squad over the winter months and both Katy and Helen have come through the RYA Junior and Youth training schemes competing at the highest levels, both nationally and internationally.

It's just been announced that Katy will join the Tera Northern Squad coaching team this winter and Brett commented 'it's great to have Katy joining Bernard and I for the winter coaching, bringing her skills - and experience of the sport of sailing from a female perspective - to our team'.

The main action starts on Saturday, with the fleet getting out on the water for practice races on Friday. The class have brought in Stuart Childerley as the Principal Race Officer for the event and he will be supported by a crew made up of club members and parents of competitors who will work on the committee boat, produce results, marshall the launching and recovery of the dinghies and provide safety cover. With over 100 competitors already registered it's going to be a fantastic event for the club, for the future of sailing in the North and for the class as a whole.
