1 April 2014
We caught up with Clipper skipper of Team OneDLL Olly Cotterell in Singapore.
"I've learnt a phenomenal amount about leadership. We've got between fifteen and twenty two crew from all sorts of backgrounds. I think one of the strengths we have on OneDLL is that we're an exceedingly close knit team with much aligned goals. That's come through in that we've managed to maintain consistency in our results which has led to a good overall position."

Hydraulic Integrated Backstay Adjuster
Harken Adds Two Sizes to Double-Acting Hydraulic Backstay Adjuster Line
Harken has added two larger sizes to its line of Integral Hydraulic Backstay Adjusters. These additions to our other two sizes have expanded the range to accommodate boats with wires from 5.5 to 9.5 mm (7/32 to 3/8 in)—approximately 9-18 m (30-60 ft). In an industry first, the cylinder features an integrated double-acting pump that delivers oil when the handle is pushed and pulled, reducing pumping time by nearly doubling the flow of single-acting pumps standard on other integrals.

'Honalee' a custom day cruiser operable by remote control
'Honalee' was built with a minimalist deck and cockpit designed in house specifically for single handed or short crewed sailing. The really exciting aspect of this yacht is that she can be sailed remotely using a handheld remote control.
The owner of Honalee emphasised his desire to use only the most modern engineering. This can be seen aboard with various aspects of her design such as the use of an all LED navigation and cockpit mood lighting system, as well as charging points for an iPad and iPhone. But it must be said the most impressive detail is the inboard electric motor, which is housed at the top of the keel and drives a twin blade folding propeller speeding 'Honalee' along at over five knots for an extended period.

Choosing Winch Power by Brion Toss
"Winches, unmatched in their combination of speed and power, predominate aboard today's shorthanded high-tension vessels.
Sheets can be controlled by blocks alone or by blocks compounded by a winch, depending on how much strain the weather is giving. Running backstays and the halyards for full batten or gaff sails are two more candidates for block-and-winch teamwork. An extra part or two on a purchase means you can go with a smaller winch that will receive less strain.
A modern sail plan comprises a few large, very powerful sails. The intent is to produce greater efficiency and less complexity than the traditional approach of more and smaller sails. But the modern sail plan concentrates forces to such an extent that the winch is the only practicable way to make things work.
In determining adequate winch size, work generated by the sails is the obvious consideration. But work generated in the winch itself is nearly as significant.
How big then does a winch have to be to overcome both the pull of the sails and its own drag?"
Brion Toss delves into the essential details to consider when choosing a winch and how winches can magnify human power on a boat.
