Wayfarer Irish National Championships at East Down Yacht Club

by Robin Anderson 22 Oct 2013 18:59 BST 5-6 October 2013

The Wayfarer Irish Nationals took place at East Down Yacht Club in Northern Ireland on the weekend of the 5th & 6th October 2013 with twelve boats competing, and ages ranging from thirteen to eighty something!

There were five races allowing one discard. Saturday arrived warm and sunny with a force 3 gusting 4 from the south/southwest, which led to three great races. With a mixture of windward/leeward and triangular courses the battle up front was likely to be between the four Hartley Mark IVs and a woodie with a great racing pedigree.

After three good clean races, the result was, as expected, Trevor Fisher & Emily Watt in their woodie MegB first, Monica Schaefer & Elise Beket in Anamcara, a Mark IV, second and Henry O'Friel & Elaine Vogan in Way Fair Lady, also a Mark IV, third. With no real dramas other than a rather unsuspecting helm being plucked out of his boat and deposited in the water by another boat's boom it had been a day of clean starts and competitive racing.

Day two started dull and cloudy with winds blowing force 4 to 5 gusting 6. Trevor & Emily held on to win both of the day's races and apart from the odd collision and a capsize the racing was very competitive and enjoyable. In second place were Margie Crawford & Rachel Reid with Monica & Elise third.

Prizes were presented by the Commodore of East Down Yacht Club, Mr Robert Dow, to overall winners Trevor & Emily, second Monica & Elise (who had travelled from Holland) and Margie & Rachel third.

A great weekend was enjoyed by all competitors. Visitors are always welcome at EDYC to enjoy the wonderful sailing area around the club.
