18-26 August 2013
You may have seen three model yachtsmen taking part in the RS Elite Crewsaver Stadium Cup off the Green at Cowes last week, but from this Sunday they revert to model yachting mode with 9 days of racing at Fleetwood.
The sea front lake, purpose built in 1930, is where it all happens with first the British open A class Championship for the Vane "A" class racing for the 90yrs old Scrutton Cup, from Sun 18th to Fri 23rd.
The Vane "A" class is a non radio controlled model yacht, designed to the metre rule producing yachts over 2 metres long weighing between 12 to 20 kilos. They are steered by a vane self steering gear, which Sir Francis Chichester copied for his "Gipsy Moth".
The yachts are match raced on a tournament system schedule up & down the lake. Spinnakers are set for the most downwind direction. Scoring is 3 points for a win upwind, 2 for a win downwind. Loser scores 0.
The overall highest scorer at the end of the event on Fri pm is the winner.
There are other ancillary trophies associated with the event, more about those in our daily reports.
Racing is daily from 0930 to 1800.
From Sat 24th to Mon 26th we have the MYA IOM National Championships.
With 83 yachts entered form U.K. Ireland, Australia, France, Germany, Netherlands, & Spain, it will be almost a World Championship.
15 former National Champions and 3 former World Champions are taking part, so we expect the racing to be very close.
The yachts are raced in fleets of approx 20 over a windward / leeward course each race lasting approx 15 mins. There is promotion & relegation between the fleets with the first in the top fleet scoring 1 and the bottom of the last fleet scoring 83.
Racing daily from 0900 to 1800 daily reports from each day's racing also on facebook & twitter.
Visitors / spectators welcome at both events.
