DF95 Spring Championship at East Kent Radio Sailing Club

by Peter Jackson 5 Apr 2024 12:12 BST 4 April 2024

Rain and a shifty 6-16 knots plus gusts didn't stop close racing over 14 heats at the EKRSA's attractive Ashford Spring Event venue - Conningbrook Lakes in Kent. Almost all used first A then B rigs.

Adrian Tomlinson started with one of two wins before fading. Chairman Alan Hounsell then also got one of two but also faded. Mike Brand won the third, later showing extraordinary consistency through the shifts and holes to add a string of four further wins. Peter Jackson found all the holes in an old boat getting just two seconds, only Martin Smith otherwise made the top four, but four times.

After a slow start Dave Adams started finding his 'Dave Shifts' to win race 4, then emulated Mike Brand with four more bullets. A sequence of three fourth places to Mike's wins made it close, but a first in the last race secured the event win.

Even closer was the fight for second, Adrian Tomlinson losing out to Mike Brand by one point, but comfortably clear of Alan Hounsell, Peter Jackson and Martin Smith.

The next event is planned for the 11th April at the Associations other venue, Barton's Point Country Park, across the M2 on the Isle of Sheppey.
