Jaywalker clinches the win

Iain Laidlaw's Jaywalker is the overall winner of the 66th West Highland Week sponsored by Tunnock's.

The final day of racing, the Tobermory to Oban passage race, was postponed for an hour as organisers assessed the wind conditions. As the West Highland Week is traditionally a 'family friendly' regatta the safety of younger sailors is of paramount importance. With no signs of the strong winds abating organisers has no other option than to cancel the final leg of the regatta.

And winner in Class 3, Jaywalker, was awarded West Highland Week's highest honour – the Peter Cocks Trophy. This is awarded to the yacht, which in the opinion of the committee, has given the best overall performance throughout the series. With six races in the regatta, Jaywalker won five and had one second in her class. This is an outstanding achievement but following on the back of her win at this year's Scottish Series is even more remarkable. Looking at the statistics, and over the last 14 races in these two major Scottish regattas, Jaywalker has won 11 and come second three times in her class. When your worst result is a second you know you're doing something right!

Iain Laidlaw was quick to praise both his boat and crew saying he is ecstatic to have picked up another major title. "This is very much a team victory, the boat is sailing and being sailed brilliantly. I cannot praise my crew highly enough," he said.

Other prize winners included Angus Fyfe's Contessa 25 Popcorn, who competed in Class 8, was awarded the Angus Meldrum Trophy which is for the yacht with the best corrected time for the Oban to Tobermory Race. The team also received the Iona Shop Trophy which is presented to the yacht with the fastest time over the three passage races on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday.

In Class 0 the overall winner was Jim Dick's Grand Soleil 39 Fortuna ahead of John Stamp's Jacob V and Alan Jeffrey and Paul Scutt's Carmen II. The team has had a good solid regatta and this is a well deserved win.

Class 1 was won by Roddy Angus' More Misjif ahead of Richard Shellcock's Thrust and Ruaraidh MacLeod's Holdfast 3.

Class 2 and it was Scott Chalmers' Sunrise who was victorious over, in second, Damon Lindsay's Ionara with Christopher Eager's Double Thyme in third.

Class 3 was taken by overall champions Jaywalker ahead of Steven Forteith's Shadowfax and John MacKenzie's Stoirm Mhor in third.

Class 4 saw Donald McLaren's Sigmatic snatch victory over veteran Mylne Ketch's Glenafton with Jim Shields Slippi Jin in third.

Class 5 and it was Alan Harper's Leaky Roof II ahead of Craig Anderson's Cool Bandit 2 and Eric Chapman's Amber Haze.

This year's West Highland Week has given us all some great racing to watch. This is a great event in the Scottish sailing calendar and overall winners Jaywalker and crew were worthy winners. Will they be as successful in the 67th West Highland Week?
