Supernova Open at Scammonden Water Sailing Club

by Joanne Douglas 16 Jul 2013 07:17 BST 14 July 2013

Glorious sun shone down on 15 sailors when Scammonden Water Sailing Club hosted the Supernova Open on Sunday, July 14.

The six Scammonden sailors and 9 travellers were in for a fine race with a south westerly wind making for a great opportunity to beat up Scammonden Water.

A change to usual club start line was introduced to allow for the beat, with the start line between mark 8 and the committee boat.

Competition got hotter with a minute to go, when one visitor crossed the line and collided with two boats as he turned back, while a Scammonden club member had the perfect start, albeit five seconds too early and he too had to turn back when he crossed the line.

Race 1 went to Mike Gibson, of Bartley Sailing Club, with Tony Critchley, of Bolton Sailing Club in second place, and Paul Earnshaw, of Haversham Sailing Club, in third place.

Race 2 saw the wind pick up and the course was shortened from eight to seven marks, but a brief drop in wind saw the two lead boats get stuck, allowing for Earnshaw to take the lead in the race he went on to win, with Steve Harley, of Bartley SC, second and Tony Critchley in third place.

Race 3 saw some close sailing, and despite the mid-fleet sticking together the clear winner of race 3 and overall was Mike Gibson.

Supernova Nationals 2025 at the WPNSA overall
An impressive 88 despite a change of venue It wasn't that long ago that the Supernova fleet were excited for their upcoming visit to Plymouth for the 2025 national championships. Sadly things weren't to be with some overrunning building work unfortunately leaving us without a venue. Posted on 5 Jul
Supernova Nationals 2025 at the WPNSA Day 2
Have you ever put a blindfold on and run as fast as you can? Have you ever put a blindfold on and run as fast as you can? No? Neither have I, but I imagine it was a bit like sailing at Weymouth today. We had 3 great races in Portland harbour in what can only be described as a spooky mist. Posted on 28 Jun

Strong wind opening day for the nearly 90-strong fleet It has been a long time since the Supernova fleet visited Weymouth, last time we were here I don't think the impressive WPNSA was even built. We were excited to be back and join the 505s for a few days on the water. Posted on 27 Jun
