Series racing at Shanklin Sailing Club

Preston Points Race 3: (1 May)

Sunday 1st May the sailing was severely affected by the lack of wind. It was great to see fourteen darts out on the water. The third race in the Preston points series was started in a dead wind with the tide taking the boats over the line. Eventually a breeze developed but with the strong tide sailing was very challenging. Geoff Howlett took first, Paul Tanner second and Keith Newnham third.

Reville Points Race 4: (5 May)

Thursday 5th May was the third race in the Revill Points series. There was a good SW wind which allowed very exciting sailing. Erling Holmberg is always difficult to beat in these conditions and he took the race with plenty to spare. Stuart Pierce and Sean Strevins were unseperable at the line and so shared second place.

Sprint Series Race 2:

The second race was in sprint mode with jib and main, although some of the more senior members elected to just use the mainsail due to the increasing wind. The same course was used and again the problems arose at the windward mark, where the wind was dying at one point and yet gusting strongly just a few metres away. Those who tacked early after the first mark found a great advantage. Paul thought it was about time for a swim and capsized, and the water was so nice Andrew followed him in. Not to be outdone Bob took to the wet stuff also. Erling is too good in these conditions and took a deserved first with Keith second and Stuart third.

Fox 2-up Race 2: (8 May)

Sunday 8th May was round two of the Fox 2-up series. Lightweight crew were rounded up at home in the knowledge that Erling was looking for a sail. Andrew Cavaciuti was scratching his head trying to arrange the jib sheet and was more confused when Chris Read offered help. The only answer was to “dry” capsize his boat on the beach to reach the top of the mast, a technique very familiar to him, but usually on the water! The sea was calm, the sun shining, and t here was finally wind on a Sunday morning, albeit from shifting directions and gusting. Geoff set a course which was bound to confuse the most cerebrally challenged helms,(which it did), and eight darts 15’s started the race. The first mark was a reach, then a beat to the windward mark at no.1 buoy. The front runners were caught in wind changing directions which allowed Andrew and Chris to take advantage and pass the mark ahead. Stuart Pierce was in good position , but took a scenic tour down t he bay instead of rounding the correct mark, and ended up at the back. Chris.com opened up a large lead with excellent coaching from Paul Tanner as crew and took first. Keith”banjo” Newnham , back with Jan as crew, came from last at one stage up the field to take second. Bob Baker with son Will just got in front of Andrew at the line to take third.
