The first ever ‘Sail the Island Adventure’, held during the Bank Holiday weekend (29 April - 2 May), has raised over £15,000 for the Parkinson’s Disease Society (PDS) and has been hailed a great success.
Six crews of six people spent Saturday learning to sail 40-foot yachts in the Solent - and then set off at 7am from Cowes Yacht Haven to race each other around the Isle of Wight. The winning boat, Wild Spirit, finished in 10 hours 1 minute and 39 seconds and its crew were all from Bracknell-based pharmaceutical company, Boehringer Ingelheim.
The event was organised by Spirit Sailing, who are based on the South Coast and were established in 2002.
Hugo Middlemas, Director of Fundraising, said: “The ‘Sail the Island Adventure’ has been a great success. I would like to congratulate not just those on the winning boat, but everyone who took part and helped raise such a terrific amount of money. The Parkinson’s Disease Society is here to support all people with Parkinson’s, their families and friends through care, information and research and every penny raised can make a real difference.”
