Staying the course through a monsoon

Battling winds and torrential rain in the second wettest June since 1910 did not deter keen sailors in this year's Pick Everard Construction Industry Regatta, now in its seventh year.

40 contestants from architectural and building firms from across the UK took part in the event held at Rutland Water Sailing Club, near Oakham. Open to all dinghies and multi-hulls with a Royal Yachting Association PY handicap, the regatta is one of the biggest weekday events in the club's calendar, organised and sponsored by multi-disciplinary practice Pick Everard.

A flotilla of 29 boats attempted to take part in three races, with several unable to race due to the high winds. Firms participating included Morton and Lamberts, Stent, Bierrum International Ltd, Vinci Construction, Highways Agency and Pick Everard.

Individual first place went to Andy Smith and Tim Needham, who sailed to victory in a 505. In second place was Mat Aston, in a Contender and third place went to Grahame Newton and Mark Stevens in a Fireball. Grahame and Mark also took first in the over-45s category, with Chris Roberts in second, and Matthew House in third, both sailing Phantoms. The team event was won by Stent, with Lambert and Morton's ‘B’ and ‘A’ Teams taking second and third places respectively.

Regatta organiser at Pick Everard, Jon Adams, said "Conditions on shore looked calm, but once out on the water, heavy winds proved testing for most competitors, demonstrating the high calibre of sailors who attended our event. Congratulations to those who survived to take the podium places!"
