26 February 2012
The Supernova season 2012 kicks off this Sunday (26th) with the re-arranged Winter Championships sponsored once again by Oxford Carriers at Blithfield SC. Last time we tried (Feb 12th) it was too cold and there was little wind – it's looking good for this weekend!
The Winters herald in the usual busy Supernova calendar starting off at West Oxfordshire SC on 10 th March and then taking in 11 other open meeting venues spread around the country to form the Noble Marine sponsored Travellers series. The calendar takes in many of the regular haunts and strongholds of the class such as Cotswold SC, Bolton SC (20 boats and rising!) and Haversham SC and this year there are three new venues of Scammonden SC, Hill Head SC and Carsington SC (home club of the Hartleys).
The class seems to have an affinity with Wales with the National Championships back at Llandudno on 13th-15th July after the last visit in 2010. Last year it was Saundersfoot. The affinity with Northampton SC is just as strong – perhaps because they do such a good job whenever we are there – and the class is pleased to be back there in August once again for the Inland Championships.
If that wasn't enough the class is also looking to once again have their own starts every day at the family friendly sailing week of North West Norfolk week at the end of July.
It's not only good racing at good venues. The class is also holding two training days on Fridays before the associated Open meetings on the Saturday: At Bolton in April (part of the long weekend - oop North – Bolton, Bolton, Scammonden) and then at Blithfield in June.
This year also sees the introduction of the Epoxy Mk2 and the first production boats are beginning to roll out of Derby – with over 20 new orders already taken. The new boats are just as gorgeous as the previous MK2 but are stiffer and lighter – coming it at 55kg for a fitted out hull. Sail numbers for the new builds start at 1033.
The class association will be represented at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show on the Hartley Boats stand where one of the new boats will be on display. So, if you want to know more about the boat and the class come along and see us.
