XOD Bobby Bongers Trophy at Royal Lymington Yacht Club

by Fenella Lees 27 Sep 2011 15:39 BST 24 September 2011

22 X One Designs including 5 visiting boats competed for the Bobby Bongers Trophy 2011 on a beautiful sunny late September Saturday. After a small postponement to allow the south westerly force 2 to fill in Principle Race Officer Ken Hay got the fist of three races around a rectangular course away. With two boats returning for being to keen at the start, Neil Payne's Lizz Whizz X172 established a size-able lead by the windward mark, despite a spirited fight back from Ado Jardine in X140 Lucrezia and Stuart Jardine's Lone Star X119 in third Lizz Whizz Wizz completed her win.

Race two saw Diana helmed by Rory Paton crossing the fleet with a port tack start, only to be passed on a windshift by James Meaning helming Gleam X156 at the windward mark; positions that were not to change through the race. Early contender Leading Wind X108 helmed by Paul Woodman ended up 5th having been passed by Lone Star and Richard Field helming X92 Persephone.

Race 3 saw a recall with several boats again too keen at the start however none returned. Ado Jardine amassed an enormous lead at the windward mark from Lizz Whizz and Pesephone however he has adjudged to be OCS as were three others. This left the finishing positions for the race as Lizz Whizz first from Persephone and Karl Thorne in X34 Mersa.

After some calculation this meant that Lizz Whizz took the overall trophy from fellow Yarmouth competitor Gleam, Persephone was third ahead of Diana. Mia Bongers very kindly presented the prizes as the fleet enjoyed a well earned piece of cake.

Overall Results:

1st Lizz Whizz, Neil Payne (R.Solent YC)
2nd Gleam, James Meaning (R.Solent YC)
3rd Persephone, Richard Field (R.Lym YC)
4th Diana, Rory Paton (R.Lym YC)
5th Foxy, Mark Hall (R.Solent YC)
6th Mersa, Karl Thorne (R.Lym YC)
7th Heyday, Tom D'arcy (R.Solent YC)
8th Lone Star, Stuart Jardine (R.Lym YC)
