Gul South West Mirror Traveller at Poole Yacht Club

by Steve Wilkinson 19 Sep 2011 09:23 BST 17-18 September 2011

The fifth and final round of this year's South West Mirror Travellers series took place over the weekend of 17/18th September, as part of the Poole YC Youth Regatta. Conditions proved challenging over the two day event, which was also acting as a Zone and National Squad qualifier as well as a Southern Traveller.

A fleet of 25 boats provided a good turnout with attendees from clubs in Cornwall, Staffordshire, Yorkshire and the south coast clubs of Itchenor, Poole and Warsash.

Those involved in the South West Mirror Travellers series could do nothing to stop Kim May-Papailliou and Amy Sparks from winning the event overall following a string of consistent results, and they are to be congratulated for having travelled from their home club of Poole to the other venues at Looe SC, Restronguet SC, Mounts Bay SC and Penzance SC to contest the series.

Second overall were Rebecca Stephens and Lisa Prichard from Mount's Bay and Penzance Sailing Clubs, who have only started sailing together this year, and to whom we offer our hopes and best wishes in their current attempts to qualify for a National Squad place.

Third overall were Esther and Lauren Bowdler of Looe SC who, having attended the South West Training group run by Ashley Shepherd last autumn / this spring, decided to try and put their training to the test by taking part in the South West Travellers series (to good effect).

Thank you to Gul for sponsoring the events, and thank you to all those of you that have participated in this years event, especially for those parents who have had the job of getting to the different venues and supporting the crews.

The series will be run again in 2012, when we hope that we will see an increase on the 26 south west Mirrors that participated this year. Details of the 2012 dates will be coming out later this year.

Poole Traveller Overall Results: (top three)

1st Tom Cosier and Niamh O'Neill (RSC)
2nd Rebecca Stephens and Lisa Prichard (MBSC/PZSC)
3rd Esther and Lauren Bowdler (Looe SC)
