Cadet World Championships at Kuhlungsborn, Germany - Day 3

by David Elliott 1 Aug 2011 20:22 BST 30 July - 5 August 2011

Ukrainian pairing Oleksandr Isarov & Andriy Kalinchuk sailing UKR 9251 lead the 2011 Rugen Fisch World Championships at the end of the third day. Having lost Sunday’s racing due to little wind, a further three races were sailed today in a moderate breeze, bringing the total to five. Counting a first, two thirds and an eleventh, they lead second placed Maciej Kaminski & Szymon Ostrowski in POL 9755 by six points. Dawid Kania & Kacper Madon sailing POL 9512 lie third on 29 points, with Ilya Polyschuk & Ilya Gaydaenko in RUS 9811 fourth on 31 points, Santiago Ureta & Tomas Peluso in ARG 9479 fifth with 45 points and Andrew Smith & Rory Burdock sixth in GBR 9243 Blue String Pudding with 46 points.

Maciej & Szymon in POL 9755 dominated the day’s first race. Leading at the windward mark, they held off challenges from Ilya & Ilya in RUS 9811 and Oleksandr & Andriy in UKR 9251, who finished second and third respectively. The second race saw Natalia Wierzbicki & Zuzanna Skibicka in POL 9489 open up a commanding lead to take the gun from Anna Shcherbyna & Marta Novikova in UKR 9731, with Ilya & Ilya third. The day’s final race proved the most competitive. Mateusz Wisniewski & Zofia Walczak in POL 9803 were first at the windward, followed by Ilya & Ilya in second, Alex & Lucy Corby in GBR 9000 third and Oleksandr & Andriy in fourth. Breaking away from the following fleet, these four teams fought a close battle around the course, with Oleksandr & Andriy hauling in the rest to take victory. Ilya & Ilya finished second and Alex & Lucy third.

The day proved challenging for GBR teams. Apart from Alex & Lucy in the final race, only Matt Currell & Theo Smith in GBR 8997 Executrix achieved a top ten place, finishing fourth in the day’s middle race.

GBR teams fill the top three places in the Hanse Youngster Promotional Regatta, although they did not have it all their own way. Alice Endersbee & Eliza Davis in AUS 9289 led throughout the day’s first race, being followed home by Oliver Palierakis & Robert Keen in GBR 7495 and Jules Greeve & Victor de Rispaimsel in BEL 8519. Oliver & Robert then went on to win the remaining two races; the first from overnight leaders Mary Henderson & Lulu Knott sailing GBR 8561, with Jules & Victor again third and the final race from Jack Wilson & Ryan Wilkinson in GBR 735 with Mary & Lulu third.

Counting two victories, a second and a third, Mary & Lulu lead by two points from Oliver & Robert on nine points from two victories, a second and a fifth. Jack & Ryan lie third on 17 points, Jules & Victor are fourth with 20 points, Amir & Aliya Jannaty in GBR 9319 are fifth with 23 points and Anna Oczkowska & Patrycja Galazka in POL 9847 lie sixth with 24 points.
