Shirley Robertson at The Route du Rhum on CNNs MainSail

by Sam Glover, CNN 17 Nov 2010 20:43 GMT 18/20/21 November 2010

November's edition of MainSail looks at one of sailing's most extreme races, The Route du Rhum. This race takes place every four years and is a sporting major in France with over a million visitors coming to see the 85 skippers and their boats before they leave.

MainSail host Shirley Robertson meets Frenchman Sidney Gavignet in the build up the race, as he trains on his 110 foot multihull on the Atlantic, before joining him in St Malo for an intense few days before the race begins.

Shirley is on the water with Gavignet's family and members of his share team as they watch him start his first ever solo ocean race in spectacular style. For the first 20 miles, he charges away from France in front of thousands of spectator boats. During the race Shirley stays in contact with Gavignet via satellite communications and then heads to the finish in Guadeloupe to be there when the leaders arrive.
