On this month’s MainSail, Shirley Robertson looks at the nominees for the prestigious ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards - the highest award a sailor can receive in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the world of sailing.
In the weeks building up to the ceremony host Shirley Robertson spends time with some of those hoping to leave Zappeion in Athens, where the ceremony is held, with the trophies. During the evening she spends time with the nominees as they wait for the moment they are forced to put on a brave smile as they see the potential of winning the trophy slip out of their hands, or they stand up to collect a unique prize. Few sports are more diverse than sailing and the programme looks back at a year where nominees for the award include 2010 sailing world champions aiming for Olympic Gold in London 2012, the first man ever to lead a crew non-stop around the planet in less than fifty days, and the first ever kite surfer to be nominated.
