Solo Sea Series event at Seafarers Sailing Club

Eight Solos enjoyed some excellent sailing in the Solent in a steadily rising wind and choppy conditions at Seafarers SC. The first race was dominated by Collins who took an early lead on the first windward leg of the alternate triangles and ‘sausages’ course. Although gamely chased by Ball and Evans, Collins extended his lead and finished well ahead of the pack.

After lunch the wind had risen to Force 5. In the day’s second race Ball took an early lead but it was Collins who eventually prevailed after some close sailing. Once again the leaders were harried by Evans and Stimpson who has not realised that he was OCS at the start.

For the final race the tide had turned and, with the wind now gusting Force 6 against the tide, the waves were short and steep. Planing down the waves on the reaches was exhilarating but the upwind legs required good technique to prevent the waves turning tacks into ‘irons’.

With Evans chasing hard it was nevertheless Collins and Ball who proved to be masters of the testing conditions, finishing in first and second place respectively. This was an event well deserving of its ‘Sea Series’ title.
