Squib Southern Championships at Royal Dart Yacht Club

by David West 14 Sep 2009 22:30 BST 12-13 September 2009

39 Squibs entered for the National Squib Southern Championships - a record for this event – held in 2009 under the burgee of the Royal Dart YC 12 and 13 September. The winds were not kind, being particularly fierce during race three during which the Chairman of the National Squib Owners Association, David Wines, managed to fall out of his Squib a mere 150 yards from the finishing line while lying 5th.

The championship went to Alan Johnson, on this occasion with top crew Mark Thompson - both from South Caernarvonshire YC - who won four of the six races and discarded a 5th place. Alan now has his ‘new’ 35 year old boat going really fast having been threatening to do so since last year. All the work that he has put in to Cariad Bach 132 has proved worthwhile (even if it would probably have been less expensive to buy a new boat!)

Second were Mike and Penny Fenwick in Ghost Rider 758, from Weymouth SC, winning the first race and never thereafter out of the top five. The other race was won by Gerard Dyson and Adam Saltonstall in Alchemy 800. The leading lady helm was Pam Evans from Felixstowe Ferry SC in 8th. The first local boat was Tearaway 501, with Mike Mackie and Roger Nuttall in 12th.
