Commodores Cup at Liverpool Yacht Club

Liverpool Yacht Club held the annual Commodores’ Cup race on Saturday September 5th. The format of the event is that Commodores from the kindred clubs helm LYC member’s yachts.

After a week of strong winds the weather was a benign but reasonable W to SW that was ideal for a fleet where all the yachts are being skippered and helmed by strangers. An excellent turnout of twelve yachts enables all 11 Commodores to be able to skipper a yacht.

Derek Sparks of Race Control set a course that took the fleet on a fine reach up the Garston channel before tacking over to the Eastham channel before a run back across the river. This was again repeated but with the wind perhaps a little more SW than for the first crossing.

West Kirby sailing Nick Ogden’s J122 took line honours ahead of RMYC in John Carriers J109 sleeper. After handicap adjustment, the difference between first and tenth was under 12 minutes.

West Lancs. YC in Andy Napper’s and Annie Wards GK24 Di-Rich won the cup with Dee SC 46 seconds behind sailing Steve Harrison’s Sigma 33 Quattro.

Liverpool YC took third in Stuart Lofthouse’s Impala Skukusa. Many thanks to all the Skippers and a full list and positions are given below. Finally, Chris Bailey who did not have a Commodore on board was able to celebrate his first race finish.
