Gul RS200 Nationals at Looe Sailing Club - Day 4

by RS Class Association 20 Aug 2009 11:49 BST 16-20 August 2009

After 3 days of light airs and some good sunshine, it was all change for day four of the RS200 Nationals. A good 15-18 knots was blowing in a misty bay, with drizzle in the sky – beautiful English summertime conditions! Woolly hats came out and the fleet launched though, looking forward to some fast downwind sailing at last.

Race 7 started at the first attempt and the fleet was heavily bunched at the right hand side of the gate line, with the wind looking good on that side. The leaders came out of the middle though and at the top mark it was Geoff Carveth/Emma Clarke who were in the lead. Despite the wind lightening as the race went on, Carveth/Clarke held on for the win. James Peters/Alan Roberts scored a fine second place and Dave/Jane Hivey added to their weeks collection of third places.

By the start of race 8, the wind had lightened considerably but the waves were still large and confused, making sailing tricky. The gate boat certainly found that to be the case, and it took four attempts to get the race underway. Once it started though, those who had started early and gone hard left gained the benefit of clear air and lanes at the windward mark. Carveth/Clarke led again at the windward mark, with Peters/Roberts being the only boat to get across from the right to follow them around. Downwind, Peters/Roberts found some extra pressure to overtake Carveth/Clarke and then applied a tight cover to the finish line. Joe Glanfield/Kate Macgregor showed good pace as the wind increased during the race to claim third.

Overall, there is now just a three place cap between Carveth and Peters at the top of the table, with Ian Martin/Chris Catt a further 6 points back. The forecast for the last day is 20knonts and strong rain and it will surely be a real showdown to find this years champions.

In the silver fleet, Katrina Gilbert/Jenny Rust have maintained their lead over John/Jennifer Reekie, while Tom Morris/Emma Porteoushead the bronze fleet, just in front of Stephen Tierman/Sarah Hickman.
