XOD Central Solent Championship at Hamble River Sailing Club

by Jonty Sherwill 19 Jul 2009 19:43 BST 18-19 July 2009

The traditional XOD Cowes Week warm-up event was this year hosted by Hamble River Sailing Club. Just seventeen boats entered and it seems the XOD calendar may be getting overfull, with the increasingly popular Cowes Classic Keelboat regatta starting on Tuesday.

Saturday's programme of five windward-leeward races was cut short to three forty-minute races as the wind gusted to 28 knots, and Sunday was abandoned as a gale built in the Solent.

Dominant in the testing conditions on Saturday was Neil Payne's No.53 'Quest' that scored 1,2,1 ahead of the Lawrence brothers sailing two-up aboard No.26 'Catherine'. Despite this apparent disadvantage they dominated Race 2 and had the measure of past Cowes Week Captain's Cup winner Simon Russell sailing 'Swallow' who finished third overall.
