A small but talented fleet of N12s turned up to compete for the annually awarded Charles Sawyer Trophy. Five races were scheduled, three on Saturday and two on Sunday. As it turned out the fickle late summer breeze meant that only four races were completed. Graham Camm and Zoe Ballantyne (N3492) revelled in the light stuff and won three races and finished second in the last. Tom Stewart and Liz Ross (N3476) recovered well from bad starts and first beats on Saturday and improved on Sunday winning race four, they finished second overall. Mike Hoyle crewed by Tim Goodhew (N3438) sailed a very consistent series including three third places and funnily enough finished third.
The team prize was won by Burghfield S.C. with the Camms being backed up by Caroline Martin & Jane Jones who finished fifth overall.
Overall Results:
1st G.Camm & Z.Ballantyne (Burghfield S.C.)
2nd T. Stewart & E.Ross (Northampton S.C.)
3rd M.Hoyle & T. Goodhew (Henley S.C.)
National 12 Midland Area Junior Event:
The Midland Area Junior Event also took place at Northampton after the end of the open meeting racing on Sunday. Rebecca Johnson had a promising start but was overtaken by Jimmy Whitehead on the approach to the windward mark. George Kitching took second place down the run but with only 10 ½ stone in the boat was unable to hold on to it up the next beat. Rebecca pulled away to nip at Jimmy’s heels but Jimmy managed to hang on to the finish.
Overall Results:
1st Jimmy Whitehead & Hannah May
2nd Rebecca Johnson & Nicholas Copsey
3rd George Kitching & Tim Goodhew
Vintage Twelves at Derwent Reservoir:
A competitive fleet of seven Vintage National Twelves raced for the J & T Hancock Trophy on September 4. A handicap system developed many years ago by the host club was used, in which the timed finishes of the first scratch race were used to set the starting times for the two subsequent pursuit races. The first race in a lively Force 3-4 breeze was won by N.2266, sailed by Howard & Sarah Chadwick, followed by N.2487 (Paul Turner & Kay Ash) and N.1673 (Brian Herring and Ros Stevenson). The second race, with a lighter breeze, was won by Towan & Jennifer Hancock of DRSC, with a photo finish for second place, just won by N.2300 (Ken Goddard & Alex Milburn). The final race, in Force 1-3, was won by Goddard & Milburn, with the Hancocks second.
Overall Results:
1st K.Goddard (Trent Valley SC) & A. Milburn (DRSC)
2nd T & J Hancock (DRSC)
3rd B. Herring & R. Stevenson (Winsford Flash SC)
