Gul RS200 Inland Championships at Rutland Sailing Club

by RS Class Association 1 Oct 2008 19:49 BST 27-28 September 2008

Carveth on a roll

78 RS200s descended on Rutland SC, in defiance of a miserable forecast, on 27-28 September for the final big event of the season, the GUL sponsored Inland Champs. Several competitors had jetted straight in from the Laser Sb3 Worlds in Dublin and were rewarded, along with the rest of the fleet, with a glorious day of warm sunshine and a completely unexpected 10knots - those who had pre-entered but stayed at home made a bad decision!

Racing was tight across the fleet, but one man stood out. Geoff Carveth, sailing with Emma Clarke, showed everyone why he has won so many national championships by scoring 3 wins and a 2nd, continuing his good form following his win in the SB3 worlds. Back in the pack however, results were up for grabs in the shifting breeze. James Peters/Alan Roberts took best advantage, scoring two wins (the 200s were racing in flights), while Jon Teague /Jo Lucas, Pete Vincent/Tess Nicholls and Roger Gilbert/Jane Willan also got in on the act, winning a race each. The fleet eventually got ashore just as dark fell, having completed 4 races in champagne conditions – well done PRO!

Saturday night saw the FatFace circuit prize giving, before the 200’s did what they do best – overran the bar and caused general mayhem! Top awards go to the Martin family for some spectacular self combustion and HRH Nicholls for showing such good gymnastic skills on top of the bar…

Sunday morning dawned to a mill pond of a lake and drizzle. After a long wait, the abandonment flag went up – just in time for a solid 7knots to fill in while the fleet packed up! Overall, Carveth/Clarke were clear winners. 2nd – 12th places were separated by just 11 points though, with Peters/Roberts in 2nd and the last minute pairing of Rob Janering/Debs Fletcher 3rd.

So, a great end to a great season. The next event will be the winters at Grafham in February 2009 – so get practicing now and hope to see you on the water soon!
