Olympic Sailing Regatta day five news

by Mark Jardine 13 Aug 2008 07:29 BST 9-21 August 2008

All times BST

10:55 - Update

It looks like race 4 for the Laser and Laser Radial fleets and race 8 for the Finn and Yngling fleets is being rescheduled. My guess is that they'll be holding 3 races for these fleets tomorrow instead of two... if the wind allows.

10:02 - Update

Racing is currently posponed for the four fleet still out on the water. The Portland wind vane is now registering gusts of over 50 knots. Neither Olympic venue is currently suitable for sailing...

9:44 - Update

We've still got race 4 for the Laser and Laser Radial fleets and race 8 for the Finn and Yngling fleets to come as long as the wind stays in.

9:39 - Laser - Race 3 Finish

US sailor Andrew Campbell has won. Paul Goodison has finished 15th.

9:36 - Finn - Race 7 Finish

Ben has finished second, his closest rival overall, American Zach Railey finished 7th so Ben's extended his lead. The Croat Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic won the race.

9:23 - Yngling - Race 7 Finish

Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb & Pippa Wilson have finished second behind the Russian team of Ekaterina Skudina, Diana Krutskikh & Natalia Ivanova. The Dutch team of Mandy Mulder, Annemieke Bes & Merel Witteveen dropped to 4th on the final run to give the Brits a 5 point lead.

9:20 - 470 Women - Race 6 Finish

Ai Kondo & Naoko Kamata from Japan have won the race. Christina Bassadone & Saskia Clark have finished 13th.

9:19 - Finn - Race 7 Update

Ben Ainslie has rounded the final windward mark 2nd, 49 seconds behind Croatian sailor Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic.

9:17 - Laser Radial - Race 3 Finish

Penny Clark wins!

9:16 - Laser Men - Race 3 Update

Paul Goodison has moved from 23rd to 14th at the first leeward mark - nice work.

9:12 - 470 Men - Race 6 Finish

Nick & Joe have finished 6th. The race was won by Stuart Mcnay & Graham Biehl (USA). This puts Nick & Joe in 3rd overall at the end of the day, just 1 point off 2nd.

9:10 - Laser Radial - Race 3 Update

Penny Clark is back in the lead! Just the run and short reach to the finish. Go on!

9:08 - Laser - Race 3 Update

Paul Goodison has rounded the first windward mark in 23rd. US sailor Andrew Campbell is leading. The Americans are liking conditions today.

8:43 - Yngling - Race 7 Update

It's not just Ben who can fly through a fleet. The British Yngling trio are up to 2nd at the final windward mark. Perhaps more importantly they've overtaken their closest rivals - they Dutch team are now in third.

9:01 - 470 Women - Race 6 Update

It's all change at the windward mark. It looks like the right hand side has paid. The Brazilian team who were in the lead have dropped to 6th. Not great news for Christina & Saskia who are amongst the tail-enders. Those who went to the left have been punished. The Japanese team of Ai Kondo & Naoko Kamata are in the lead in this race but 17th overall. Being consistent in this fleet is proving difficult.

8:42 - Finn - Race 7 Update

Ben Ainslie has done what he does best - he's moved from 7th at the windward mark to 2nd at the leeward mark - awesome.

8:56 - 470 Men - Race 6 Update

Nick & Joe have moved up to 5th. The US team of Stuart Mcnay & Graham Biehl have a massive 1 minute 40 second lead over the fleet but they're in 21st overall...

8:45 - Laser Radial - Race 3 Update

Penny Clark has dropped to second - just 7 seconds behind Israeli sailor Nufar Edelman at the leeward mark.

8:43 - Yngling - Race 7 Update

The Brit trio are moving up - 5th at the leeward mark. The race is now being led by the US team of Sally Barkow, Carolyn Howe & Deborah Capozzi. The Brits closest rivals, Mandy Mulder, Annemieke Bes & Merel Witteveen from Holland, are in third. If positions stay as they are the Brits will have just a 1 point lead over the Dutch.

8:45 - Laser Radial - Race 3 Update

Great news from this course - Penny Clark is holding the lead after the first lap.

8:43 - Yngling - Race 7 Update

The British trio of Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb & Pippa Wilson have rounded 7th. The Russians are leading this fleet today as well.

8:42 - Finn - Race 7 Update

Russian sailor Eduard Skornyakov led round the windward mark. Ben Ainslie rounded 7th.

8:41 - 470 Men - Race 6 Update

Nick & Joe have moved up to 7th at the leeward mark.

8:35 - 49er - Race 9 Finish

Stevie & Ben have finished 2nd. That puts them 8th at the end of the day. It looks like it's going to be a roller coaster ride for this team and everyone following them! The US team of Tim Wadlow & Christopher Rast had the perfect day - 3 bullets - moving them up to 6th overall.

8:34 - 470 Women - Race 6 Update

The top three boats have rounded the windward mark. Brazil first, Australia second & Japan third.

8:32 - Finn - Race 7 Start

It's going to be busy for the next hour - the Finn fleet have started.

8:31 - Laser & Laser Radial - Race 3 Start

It's all action in Qingdao! Two more fleets have started a race.

8:30 - Yngling - Race 7 Start

Racing has just got underway in 6 knots of wind.

8:27 - 49er Race 9 and 470 Men Race 6 Update

The British teams are maintaining position. Stevie & Ben are 8th and Nick and Joe are 7th.

8:22 - Update from the 2012 venue

A friend who's camping at Eweleaze's Farm overlooking the 2012 Weymouth Olympic sailing area confirms it's blowing dogs off chains.

8:10 - 470 Women - Race 6 Start

The sequence is back underway - two minutes to go. Richard Simmonds has just informed us that the wind forecast for Sunday is 15 knots!

8:15 - 470 Men - Race 6 Update

Nick Rogers & Joe Glanfield have rounded the windward mark 8th. The US pairing of Stuart Mcnay & Graham Biehl have rounded the windward mark 1st.

8:12 - Olympic venues linked?

Is the wind in Qingdao inversely proportional to the wind in Weymouth? It seems it might be today, 3 knots in Qingdao while the Portland Wind Vane is reading 35 knots gusting 42.

8:11 - 49er - Race 9 Update

Stevie & Ben have rounded the windward mark in 7th.

8:10 - 470 Women - Race 6 Start

The start sequence was abandoned with a fee seconds to go.

8:03 - Update

Racing is underway for the 470 Men and 49ers. The 470 Women are just entering their 5 minute start sequence. Still nothing for the Finns, Lasers and Laser Radials. It's 90% humidity out there today - not nice to be sitting and waiting around.

7:45 - 49er - Race 8 Finish

Stevie & Ben have finished 3rd.

7:42 - 49er - Race 8 Finish

Stevie & Ben dropped to third at the final windward mark. The race has been won by the American pairing of Tim Wadlow & Christopher Rast - that's two bullets for them today.

7:27 - 470 Women - Race 5 Finish

The Austrian team of Sylvia Vogl & Carolina Flatscher have won followed by the Dutch team of Marcelien De Koning & Lobke Berkhout. The Dutch have now closed up on series leaders Elise Rechichi & Tessa Parkinson from Australia after they finished 9th. Christina & Saskia finished 15th.

7:17 - 49er - Race 8 Update

Stevie & Ben have bounced back from their OCS in race 7 to lead around the windward mark. Great stuff boys!

7:14 - Laser Radial - Race 3 Start

News in that the race has started.

7:07 - 470 Men - Race 5 Finish

The Irish team of Gerald Owens & Phil Lawton have won the race followed by the Italians Gabrio Zandona & Andrea Trani. Series leaders Nathan Wilmot & Malcolm Page have climbed to third. Nick & Joe struggled down the final run to finish 8th but have moved up to 3rd in the overall standings.

7:00 - 470 Women - Race 5 Update

Christina & Saskia have moved up to 14th at the leeward mark. The Austrians continue to lead.

6:58 - 470 Men - Race 5 Update

Great progress up the beat for Nick & Joe. They've rounded the top mark in 5th. If things stay as they are down the run they'll be up to second overall behind the Australians Nathan Wilmot & Malcolm Page.

6:56 - 470 Men - Race 5 Update

Looks like more wind - Malcolm Page (Australian 470 crew) just used the trapeze! The Australians look to have made some gains on the Brazilians up the beat. The Irish team have rounded the final windward mark with a 25 second advantage.

6:53 - 470 Men - Race 5 Update

Gerald Owens & Phil Lawton are covering the fleet up the beat nicely. This is the race that is being covered live by the BBC. Press the Red button if you've got satellite, cable or freeview. Richard & Shirley are doing a great job with the commentary considering what they've got to work with - it's hard work to make sailing look exciting in this light wind.

6:50 - 470 Women - Race 5 Update

A massive 5 knots of wind on Course A close to the Olympic Sailing Centre. If the 470s had reefing points I'm sure they'd use them. At the first windward mark the Austrian team of Sylvia Vogl & Carolina Flatscher have rounded first. The British team of Christina Bassadone & Saskia Clark have rounded 16th.

6:46 - 49er - Race 7 Finish

The US team of Tim Wadlow & Christopher Rast have won the race. Amazingly, this race was held in 2 - 3 knots of wind with 30 degree shifts...

6:43 - 470 Men - Race 5 Update

The Irish and Brazilian teams are ahead of the pack at the leeward mark. Nick & Joe have rounded in 7th in clear air. Most teams are banking on the left hand side of the course.

6:40 - 470 Women - Race 5 Start

Racing has started.

6:38 - 49er - Race 7 Update

Bad news for Stevie Morrison & Ben Rhodes - they were OCS. Argh!

6:30 - 470 Men - Race 5 Update

The race has started in very light winds (around 6 knots) on the show course (A). There was a general recall on the first attempt but then racing got underway. It looked like some of the teams were over the line but no-one went back. The Irish team of Gerald Owens & Phil Lawton banked on the right hand side of the beat and rounded the top mark first. Nick Rogers & Joe Glanfield rounded in 8th.
