Broadstairs Sailing Club on the eastern tip of Kent hosted the Thanet regatta over the weekend of 28th/29th June, attracting 51 entries. In addition to racing in three classes, primarily for sailors from the local clubs at Broadstairs, Margate and Minnis Bay, the Snipe and RS600 fleets were welcomed with competitors from France, Belgium and all over the UK.

Fast and slow handicap racing was on a club course off the harbour, with the asymetrics, Snipes and 600s on an offshore committee boat course. With the wind in the south-west, some ingenuity was required to set the club course to include a decent beat.

Saturday saw very challenging conditions with 30 knot winds and associated big seas, but even so one race was completed, albeit with many retirements.

On Saturday evening there was entertainment in the clubhouse with competitors still buzzing from the excitement of the afternoons sailing.

Sunday saw near ideal racing conditions throughout the day, and a further five races were sailed back to back, followed by prize giving in the clubhouse.

Club Commodore Doug Spooner paid tribute to all those involved in organising the event, including members from the local clubs, the Royal Temple Yacht club and Dover Watersports Centre.
