Mudeford Week at Mudeford Sailing Club - Day 3

28 July - 3 August 2007
The light winds continued to provide very close racing for 60 boats ranging from a Contender to a Zoom8 (the first in the country – an Optimist on steroids?). Someone commented after racing “in this weather it’s just down to luck and catching the right gust” but then ruefully added “the top sailors still seem to get to the top though!”
Last year’s Series winner Ian Bray (Christchurch SC, Solo) had an excellent race, pipping Welwyn Garden City’s Annette Walter in her Comet, Mudeford’s Phil Sowden (Laser) and Highcliffe’s Stephen Waite in a Megabyte. In fact the first 6 places were all different boats, with Alan Dalziel’s Rooster 8.1 getting ahead of Mudeford’s Commodore Ken White in his Enterprise.
Slow Fleet honours went to Patrick Thompson (Optimist) with the Graduate of Paul Athay (Shearwater) 2nd and Charmaine Barnett (Mirror, Highcliffe) 3rd.
After the serious racing there was a fun relay race for teams of 4. The wind had picked up to a F3, so a Topper carrying 4 wriggling Juniors was just looking to capsize all round the course. I think the Roger dog’s team won, though he slept through most of it. More tomorrow!
