East Coast Sailing Week Preview

by Nigel Duncan 27 Apr 2007 15:17 BST 20-23 July 2007

Edinburgh will host the biggest regatta in the East Coast of Scotland this season. East Coast Sailing Week returns to the Capital after a two-year break in a new shortened form. This time, top racers will contest seven races over four days from Friday, July 20 to Monday, July 23, in the Forth. And BP will sponsor the Granton-based event which is likely to attract more than 50 yachts.

Feeder races from North-East England, Tayside and Port Edgar will also be programmed and chairman George Brown revealed that the switch to a shorter event followed a survey among enthusiasts. He said: "The Forth is perhaps the finest stretch of racing water in the UK with clear winds, moderate tidal currents and minimal shipping traffic and the programme is packed with seven races and evening social events.

"The sailing for this year’s event has been modified, with the introduction of two fleets, racer/cruiser and cruiser/racers. Each fleet will be sailing different styles of races, with courses to suit the boats and crew whilst retaining the enjoyment of sailing in a big fleet."

"All races will be within eight nautical miles of Granton and ashore we'll have a marquee with food and drink available with entertainment in the evenings based at Royal Forth Yacht Club. What's more, the shortened event gives enthusiasts enough time to travel to Oban for West Highland Yachting Week via the canals."
