At the 2007 RYA Dinghy Show, Musto announced the inauguration of an ‘Academy of Excellence’, which will support selected members of the RYA National Youth and Junior squads.
At a party to launch the initiative, attended by a number of young dinghy sailors including the new Mirror World Champions, Anna Mackenzie and Holly Scott (both former RYA National Junior Squad members), Simon Payne, Musto Marketing Director, and Simon Wergan, RYA Youth Racing Manager, set out the criteria by which candidates would be identified.
“Firstly, we’re looking for that all important performance and potential for improvement,” stated Payne who is currently International Moth World Champion, “and we’re keen to encourage those who will benefit from having exactly the right kit for the class in which they are competing. At top level, there’s no room for compromise in the vital matter of performance clothing and, by the time, other bills and expenses are accounted for, it’s often the clothing that suffers.”
Simon Wergan made it clear that the criteria also look for good brand ambassadors for the Association and Musto, both on and off the water.
Between three and six sailors will be personally selected as the first members of the Musto Academy at the RYA Youth Championships and Trials to be held at Hayling Island SC in April, with the announcement of their decision to be made on Saturday 14 April.
