Yeadon Sailing Club hosted its annual Heron/Mirror Open event on June 13, a beautiful sunny day with moderate winds and a number of local boats taking on a powerful array of visitors.
Laser Vortex Champion, Ian Escritt, dominated the Mirror class. Ian, who won all three races, was supported in turn by his home-grown crew of sons Callum and Matthew. Names to note for the future.
In the first race home sailor Tim Gatti led all the way but was passed by Ian Escritt taking a different line on the beat to snatch the race. In the second, Gatti was again ahead at the first mark but from then on Escritt led the way with Tim fighting to stay in touch. In the third race, Yeadon Junior Ben Kelly made a good start and held second place close behind Escritt before a 720 put him out of contention, with Tim Gatti losing ground as a result of a capsize. It was left to Yeadon’s Peter Robinson and his five-year-old crew to uphold the home cause with a good second place.
The three Herons had a tremendous afternoon of competitive sailing with the honours going to Martin Hornsby-Smith who was pushed all the way by veteran Chris Dufton sailing his 60-year-old boat ‘Summer Wine’.
Overall Results:
1st Ian Escritt (Yorkshire Dales SC)
2nd Tim Gatti (Yeadon SC)
3rd Martin Hornsby-Smith Yeadon SC)
