New safety boat for St Marys Junior Sailing Club

by Charles Harvey 20 Apr 2004 11:53 BST

The Royal Thames Yacht Club has most generously agreed to provide the funding for St Mary’s Junior Sailing Club to purchase a new Pioner 12 to use as a safety boat. The original 30+ year old Mirror Hull has finally been retired.

SMJSC is committed to providing the facilities for children from the age of 8 to 16 to learn to sail on the relatively safe tidal waters of Stoke Lake in Gosport, Hampshire. From here the children move on to Stkes Bay sailing Club and the open water.

Our Commodore, Reverend Canon “Ted” Goodyer, will perform the naming ceremony and blessing. The new boat is to be named as a mixture of the old and new to recognise our fortune in finding such a sponsor. “Jakes Image” will retire and “Thames Image” will be born.

We are also most fortunate that Nat West Plc will sponsor a Pioner 8 rowing boat for the club although naming details will be defined by the sponsor.

In accordance with the sadly deceased ex-mayor of Gosport Geoff Bartlett, we have been fortunate is receiving funds from his charitable fund raising. Mrs Rosemary Bartlett has given the money to purchase a new “Topper Taz” which will be named "Geoff" in his honour. This will realise the years of dedication to children groups throughout the borough.
