Sydney 40 World Championships - Day Two

by John Roberson 2 Jul 1999 20:43 BST

GERMANY LOOK COMFORTABLE AT THE TOP OF THE SCOREBOARD

Germany's MK Cafe, steered by Karol Jablonski, now has a comfortable lead in the "Race 1 Sydney 40 World Championships", after the second day of the series.

After their first and second places on the opening day, they put in another good performance today, chalking up second and third places, to take an eight point lead with three races left to sail.

The size of their lead is as much a product of other people's mistakes as their own performance, with Merit Cup, who shared the lead after the first day, only managing sixth and seventh places today.

Merit Cup, which is representing the European Champagne Mumm Admiral's Cup team, now shares second place with Trust Computer Products of the Netherlands, who are sailing a steady but unspectacular regatta.

Racing today was delayed for two hours due to lack of wind, but when an 8 to 10 knot south easterly filled in, two short windward/leeward races were completed.

In the first race of the day, (third of the series) the Italian entry Invicta held the lead from the first mark to the finish, grabbing the gun by 25 second from MK Cafe, with Trust Computer Products third.

In the afternoon, with a strong tide flowing by this stage, it was Britain's Arbitrator that took the gun, from the Australian boat Sledgehammer, and MK Cafe third, having lost a first mark lead when she took a penalty turn.

Although this is the first regatta that Jablonski and his crew have sailed on a Sydney 40, they are have come straight from winning the Mumm 36 World Championships, and look set to collect two world titles in as many weeks.
